Grazing management is one of the most important aspects to enable persistence of a newly sown pasture. Improved pastures will not tolerate constant set stocking. Rotational grazing must be employed to not only ensure persistence of these new improved pasture species, but to also maximise growth rates. Fresh regrowth that is constantly being eaten off by stock will quickly result in loss of plant population and in turn will lead to weed invasion in your newly sown pasture. We can not emphasise enough the importance of correct grazing management and also fertiliser usage to ensure a long term healthy pasture.

Alpacas generally like a lot of roughage in their diet and are not really fussy about what they eat. The mix has a good percentage of Leura Sub Clover, which can compete well with grasses along with Prestige White Clover, which is very prostrate in its growing habit, therefore it can withstand heavy grazing.

The SPS Alpaca Mix contains coarse grasses like Kara Cocksfoot, Advance and Au Triumph Tall Fescue. These varieties can produce a bulk amount of feed and roughage once established and for quick growing feed early.

There is also a small percentage of Puna Chicory and Tonic Plantain in this mix. Both are broad-leafed perennial herbs, with an extensive taproot to aid persistence, as well as contributing to the forages high mineral content due to its uptake. Puna is slow to establish while Tonic is quick to establish with greater winter growth. Both varieties are productive in Spring/Summer when other grasses are drying off. These varieties can fill the feed gap during that time are very palatable to all classes of stock including Alpaca’s.
